What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves the use of medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It’s an ideal solution for those who experience anxiety or fear about dental visits, ensuring a comfortable and calm experience. We offer multiple options for sedation so that you can have the best experience.
Reasons for Sedation Dentistry
Patients opt for sedation dentistry for various reasons, including (but not limited to):
- Dental anxiety or phobia
- Sensitive teeth or low pain threshold
- Need for extensive dental work
- Bad gag reflex
- Past traumatic dental experiences
If any of these reasons prevent you from getting necessary dental care, give our office a call and we can get you set up for sedation dentistry. We believe in accessible, affordable dental care and our team is ready to help.
Types of Sedation
At Valery Sweeny DDS, we offer several sedation options:
- Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): Mild sedative inhaled through a mask.
- Oral Sedation: Medication taken orally before the procedure.
- IV Sedation: Administered through a vein for deeper sedation.
IV Sedation vs Oral Sedation
Still not sure which type of sedation is best for you? Here’s a quick look at some of the finer details.
IV Sedation
- Administered intravenously
- Fast-acting and easily adjustable
- Ideal for longer or more complex procedures
Oral Sedation
- Taken in pill form before the appointment
- Easier to administer
- Suitable for patients with needle anxiety
Sedation Dentistry FAQ
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Absolutely. Dr. Sweeny and her team are highly trained in administering sedation safely and monitoring patients throughout the procedure.
Will I be completely unconscious?
No. Most sedation methods keep you awake but in a deeply relaxed state. With IV sedation, you may have little memory of the procedure. Most patients will still be able to respond to simple requests from our dental team, such as “Turn your head.”
Can I drive myself home after sedation?
Not usually. For most sedation types, you’ll need someone to drive you home. Safety is our top priority.
Can anyone use sedation for their dental visits?
As with any type of medication, Dr. Valery Sweeny will check your dental and medical history, as well as anything that might impact your safety sedation. If you have allergies to the medication, or suffer from sleep apnea, it could endanger your health. But if you’re a good candidate, you’ll be welcome to use sedation for your dental visits.
Can my kids be sedated for their dental visits?
Sedation dentistry should be safe to practice for kids of most ages. That said, Dr. Sweeny will still take a look at the child’s age and medical history to prevent complications during appointments.
